This is a web page version of the program for the ACSCI conference. I have added links to presentations and e-mail addresses and created topics on http://www.ncda-forums.org for six (6) of the nine presentations listed below to provide you with a “virtual conference room” where you can (continue to) discuss them. At the bottom of these presentation descriptions will be a topic-search-code like "NFT0032" which stands for NCDA Forums Topic number 32. You will be able to click on it to go directly to the topic. If you want to to post comments on the topic, you must first register at NCDA Forums (NF). While viewing the topic, you should consider clicking on the “Track this topic” button in the upper-right of the topic if you want to get an e-mail notification when someone posts a reply to the topic. If you want to tell others about a topic so they can join you in the conversation, send them a link to NCDA Forums and include the topic-search-code and tell them to use it to search for the topic. Counselors Breaking Ranks: Making Every Child a Graduate
Robin Gelinas, Policy Associate, The Alliance for Excellent Education
Changes in society and our economy mean that the leaders of America’s education system need to be prepared to transform the schools of today into something radically different. How do we best prepare students and education leaders to meet the demands of the future? At a time when roughly 30% of students drop out and another 30% graduate unprepared for college or work, our schools are challenged to do more than meet the status quo; we must re-engage students and ensure that every student is prepared to meet the challenges of work and college. At the center of this reform are the graduation plan and the new role of the school counselor in the 21st century.

NASA-CIS
David Caulum, Program Director, Wisconsin Careers/Center on Education and Work
Don Watson, Manager, Support Systems, Center for Educational Technologies
This program will provide information on a new website about NASA being created through a joint project between the Center on Educational Technologies and Wisconsin Careers/CEW. The primary goal of the NASA Career Information System (NCIS) is to increase awareness of established and emerging careers and further study in areas supporting the mission and work NASA’s enterprises, with particular emphasis on female students, underreported minorities, and students from rural underserved regions. One method to accomplish this goal will be to link students to the career opportunities at NASA supporting existing state-based and national CIDS. The prototype of the site is intended to link both to and from existing CIDS while students are in the process of career exploration and discovery. The presenters will demonstrate the new prototype NASA-CIS and several of the key educational sites created with NASA support. They will also explain how these sites and NASA-CIS will contribute to student planning and student achievement.

A Researcher’s View of Computer-Based Career Information – Build It and They Will Come?
Paul Gore, Director, Career Transitions Research, ACT, Inc.
Two growing bodies of research speak to the importance of computer-based systems for career information. First, we know from several large-scale meta-analyses that Computer-Assisted Career Guidance systems work. Second, more recent data suggest that providing individuals with accurate career information is among the top 5 most important components of an effective career intervention. Given these findings, it is quite surprising that we know virtually nothing about how individuals go about collecting career-related information, what information they are interested in gathering, or how they might use that information for the purposes of career planning. In this presentation we will present data from a series of studies designed to describe the nature of computer-based career information gathering behavior. Additionally, we will highlight ways that our findings might be used to shape the development of future computer-based career information systems or to inform the work of career professionals and guidance personnel.
